Providing Fire Sleeve For Wire Even For The World’s Longest Cables

April 15, 2025

These days, we live in a wired world, and here at National Firesleeve, we can help you protect almost all of them with Firesleeve for wires

Offering protection at continuous temperatures of up to 260°C, fire sleeve for wire keeps the current in, so there’s no sparking or arcing, and keeps environmental hazards out, including oil, hydraulic fluid, fuels, acids, alkalis and even molten splash up to 1200°C.

However, even with our experience and expertise, there are still some mighty lengths of wiring and cables around the globe that would stretch even our capabilities to the limit. Let’s take a look at some of the world’s record-breaking wires…

  • World’s longest undersea power cable – stretching 475 miles, from Jutland in Denmark to Lincolnshire in England, the Viking Link delivers an average of 660MW of Danish wind power to Britain every day.
  • World’s longest underground cable – the Murraylink underground cable, linking Riverland and Sunraysia in Australia runs for 106 miles underground.
  • World’s longest span – most long-distance cables are made up of lots of smaller connections, but not the Ameralik Span in Greenland. Crossing a valley between Buksefjord and Nuuk, the single cable stretches 3.34 miles, yet it’s supported by just four pylons.
  • World’s longest powerline – the powerline from the hydroelectric power station at Inga to the mineral fields of Shaba, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, stretches no less than 1,100miles.
  • World’s highest power towers – the Yangtze River Crossing in China has towers that stand 1,132ft high to keep their power cables safe from the famous waters below.
  • World’s longest telephone cable – this record was held by the Fibre-optic Link Around the Globe, appropriately known as FLAG for short, which stretches 16,800 miles from Asia to Europe. However, it was surpassed by the Sea-Me-We 3 communications cable that links no less than 33 countries along its 24,000 mile length. However, this will soon be surpassed once again, if Facebook owner Meta has its way. Project Waterworth, an internet cable stretching 31,000miles will connect the US with Brazil, India, South Africa and many other countries in one immense worldwide network.
  • World’s most powerful cable – the Zhundong to Wannan cable in China has the world’s highest capacity at 12GW, while the Wardha to Aurangabad line in India operates at the world’s highest voltage of 1.2MV, just pipping the Ekibastuz-Kokshetau line in Kazakhstan, which operates at 1.15MV

Of course, you often don’t appreciate the importance of electrical safety products like fire sleeve for wire until something goes wrong. In February 1998, all four of the main cables that supplied electricity to Auckland in New Zealand failed badly. This resulted in the world’s longest blackout, which lasted 66days and cost local businesses an estimated NZ$300million (US$156million).
