Cutting the Risks of Oil and Gas with Firesleeve

November 18, 2024

“Drill, baby, drill!” exclaimed president-elect Donald Trump at his rallies, on his way to a convincing win in the US elections. It’s a call to action that heralds a new era for the oil and gas industries as they slowly start to recover following several years of post-pandemic decline.

How big is the US oil industry?

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the America’s oil and gas industry directly employed around 119,600 people in October 2024. However, that’s just the start of it. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that the industry supports a total of 10.3 million jobs nationwide, creates 8% of the US GDP and invests 16% of total capital expenditure.

The US has produced more oil than any other country for the last six years in a row, with a 2023 average of 12.9 million barrels a day, and a December 23rd record of 13.3 million barrels. This is more than Iraq, Canada and China combined.

What difference will the new administration make?

For all the hyperbole from the new administration, it is unlikely that oil production will increase significantly under Donald Trump. “I don’t know that there’s an opportunity to unleash a lot of production in the near term,” said Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods, explaining that the market was already well-supplied. ‘The world is awash with fossil fuels,’ agreed Business Insider.

That does not mean that the US oil and gas industry won’t continue on its upward trend. Production has already risen from 11 million barrels a day when Trump left office in 2021, despite the Biden administration’s strict limits on carbon-gas emissions from the likes of power plants and gas-powered vehicles. Back in October, even before the election result was known, the US Energy Information Administration was predicting a modest rise in oil production to 13.5 million barrels per day in 2025.

Leading the world

Whatever the impact of the new administration, it seems likely that America will continue to lead the world in oil and gas production. It is already producing more crude oil than any nation has at any time in the past, and in 2023, following restrictions on Russian exports, America became the world’s largest exporter of natural gas.

As a world leader in our own field, providing high quality, British-made protection, National Firesleeve are here to support the US oil and gas industry, whatever the future holds.
